Sustainability Starts with Reliability
Most sustainability conversations in enterprise IT focus on transformation.
In my experience, they should start with reliability.
Operating IBM Z environments at scale has consistently shown that efficiency is not driven by change for its own sake, but by how reliably systems perform over time.
Reliability creates predictability.
Predictability enables control.
Control is what drives efficiency.
When workloads behave consistently and systems are stable, resources can be optimised with far greater precision.
Variability is reduced, unnecessary processing is avoided, and energy usage becomes inherently more efficient.
Where reliability is lacking, fluctuation increases, excess capacity is introduced, and inefficiencies begin to compound.
At enterprise scale, these differences are material.
This is why highly resilient platforms like IBM Z naturally support sustainable outcomes—not because they are constantly changing, but because they enable disciplined, consistent operation over the long term.
If a system isn’t predictable, it can’t be efficient.
If it can’t be efficient, it won’t be sustainable.
